In a time when we are spending too much money and too many resource strategizing how God can and should work inside our churches, perhaps He is wanting our focus to be much more on how He works through us in the world as agents of redemption...how we live in the Story - as Jesus prayed "on earth as it is in heaven"..how we live our lives as pilgrims in the art galleries, the schools, the sidewalks, the pubs, the cafes, the parks, the shops, the ghettos, the suburbs, the playgrounds, the offices...
"Those who beleive they believe in God, but without passion in the heart, without anguish in the mind, without uncertainty, without doubt, and even at times without despair believe only in the idea of God and not in God Himself." -- miguel de unamuno
We have been content too long to neither believe or disbelieve but to accept God as a comfortable old habit. But God is not a comfortable old habit. Nor is He a safe fire to warm ourselves by. God can't be tamed. However God can be pursued because God pursues us.
Do we have eyes to see Jesus...and to be Jesus?
Consider this an invitation to pursue, to adventure, to action...A Toronto Pilgrimage provides a forum for people to experience faith and life formation through a variety of formal and informal city moments. Toronto is recognized as the most culturally diverse city in the world and our experiences will be attuned to its opportunities. Days and nights are filled with purposeful interaction with the city and its unique people. We will stroll the streets, listen to sounds both new and old, dialogue with friends and strangers in diners, parks, and shops. We will share in moments of grace, communion, and worship. We'll shop for groceries in a Chinese market, listen to God's voice in the silence of a city rooftop, see the face of Jesus in a little child or homeless man.
We partner with Sanctuary Ministries of Toronto and learn from their 20+ years of experience relating to street folk in Toronto. Sure we might "serve" a meal or two but the aim of our Pilgrimage is to open our eyes to Jesus at hand in the people and places right in front of us. We try to listen more than we serve...and then we take that wisdom for our neighborhoods back in Greater Portland.
Our accommodations are usually at the Neil Wycik College Hotel where we have a simple resting place, a space to prepare our meals together, and a launching zone for uncovering mission in the Way of Jesus.
We invite you to deeply connect with God and fellow pilgrims through questioning, laughing, eating, weeping, listening, and living.
"For what you see and hear depends a good deal on where you are standing. It also depends on what sort of person you are." -- C.S. Lewis The Horse and His Boy
