In our fast-paced, complex, bad-news world, we sometimes miss the Point, the People, the Way.
COASTAL is an invitation to a different kind of posture:
Shh...God is still calling out.
Listen to the Good News, "I am faithful"..."You are my child whom I love and am well pleased"... "I am with you always!"
Find refuge in the healing presence of God.
Abide on the communion Vine.
Stop and smell the wild Gospel flowers.
Take a moment to remember who God is and who we are in His Story.
Tune into the wave of the Spirit at a bench, in our cars, on the beach, in the shops & pubs, or during a church gathering.
Leisurely and locally dwell with Jesus, neighbors, creation, and soul...time & again.
Become faithfully rooted in God's love as we share communion in community.
Practice attentiveness right HERE in our Portland boroughs and right NOW in this particular season.
Discover the rhythms, assets, needs of our neighbors, boroughs, and self.
See Jesus residing in the ordinary, everyday places we least expect.
See Jesus incarnated in the ordinary faces we often disregard.
Ask redemptive questions like, Are we paying attention? Are we increasingly aware of God's Story, our neighbors stories, and my own story in Christ?
Go...as agents of reconcilation.
Into Greater Portland, Maine, and to the ends of the earth as SENT pilgrims.
Gather others to sit at the communion table with God & God's people.
Work for measurable good, change, justice.
Spread salt. light. joy. blessing.
Embody the eyes, ears, hands, feet, and heart of Christ.
Be the Church 24/7.
Follow Jesus together on everyday pilgrimage.
So...what is Coastal church?
What if it’s more than sitting in a building on Sunday morning, singing a few emotional songs, listening to another sermon, taking a shot of grape juice along with a cardboard wafer, and shaking a few hands just so we can get to the main event -- lunch?
What if church is a community of belonging where all types of people had a place at the Table?
What if church is a community of displaced and disoriented pilgrims who are en route and gathering in the name of Jesus sharing sacramental-communion meals, sharing redemptive stories, sharing burdens, sharing gifts, and offering peace, healing and forgiveness?
What if church is a way of being honest about our doubts and struggles as we journey together toward Truth?
What if church is a way of following Jesus as our guide toward true Home and centering ourselves around Jesus' values…from the way we position our chairs during a worship gathering...to the way we go about purchasing our goods & services… to the way we rejoice with those who rejoice and weep with those who weep?
What if church is something that happens when a community of people who love Jesus commit themselves to accomplishing God’s redemptive purposes in this world?
What if church is more about us going and living “out there” than staying “in here”? What if church is about both practicing the values of Jesus and believing creeds about Jesus? What if church is about loving God and accurately loving our neighbors – real people in our Greater Portland locale - as ourselves?
So, what is Coastal church?
Coastal is a group of pilgrims becoming a new kind of family formed by God on a sacred journey...
Coastal is a way of seeing everyday-Maine-living in light of Jesus…
Coastal is how we apprentice Jesus by practicing the values of Word, Spirit, Justice, and Community in context …
Coastal is a refuge of rest but it’s also a port (or an outpost for launching) for sending pilgrims out into specific neighborhoods, shops, offices, parks, urban centers, and global ghettos embodying the Resurrected Jesus in Portland and in all of creation. In doing so, we are building for God’s Kingdom on earth as it is in heaven.
Coastal is about cultivating a lifestyle of "church" by following Jesus on pilgrimage 24 hrs per day/7 days per week…
Coastal is... A new kind of family formed by Following Jesus together on everyday pilgrimage To join with God in the redemption of Greater Portland and all of creation through sacrificial love.
