POCKETS: Dwelling space for pilgrims of all ages to become rooted and established in God's love while practicing the teachings of Jesus together.
(concept based on St. Paul's prayer for the Ephesians in Chapter 3v16-19) 16 I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, 17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, 18 may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, 19 and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.
We believe groups of pilgrims need a refuge space* to rest in the love of God & rest with each other from the weary journey of everyday life. We also believe that pilgrims need a practical space to work out the vision and teachings of Jesus together in a way that is authentic. As theologian Dallas Willard taught that to experience the kingdom of God "a group of people should get together and simply try to do the things that Jesus instructed the disciples to do."
In Coastal we are following Jesus by creating community space - aka Pockets - for each other to hear from God and receive the deep, wide, high, long inheritance of love that He has in store for us...And then, to share this love in tangible ways with each other and to our local and global neighbors. After all, we are blessed to be a blessing.

Most groups share a meal and stuff-of-life conversation each time they gather together. And each group establishes its own practices/“rhythm”/covenant for their experience together. Over the course of a month a group might: meditate on Scripture, pray, share books and ideas, discuss the teaching from a recent Gathering, laugh, play games, offer encouragement and support, put on a local community event, and engage in acts of service or social justice.
Pocket Groups consist of 2-12ish people and meet on different nights of the week in various homes and locations throughout Greater Portland.

* What do we mean by "space"? We mean a place, a templum (temple or sanctuary), a port, an outpost, a refuge or dwelling, a Kingdom training school, an active learning laboratory in the presence of God.
